What is Counselling?
I am aware of how difficult it may be to make the first step to seeking help. I aim to provide a safe and non-judgemental therapeutic space for you to express your thoughts and feelings. By doing so, this can help you understand more clearly how to deal with the situation you might find yourself in.

Therapy is a collaborative process and is an opportunity for you to talk to another person who is completely non-judgmental, with the assurance of complete confidentiality.

Therapy is not about 'giving advice' but about learning to understand your unconscious patterns of behaviour' which can make us feel unable to move forward with our lives. This can result in overwhelming feelings of sadness, anxiety, depression low self-esteem, or perhaps a sense of isolation or lack of direction. It can also be beneficial, where applicable, in learning techniques to deal with stress, anger, depression, etc.

Therapy can be effective in helping with the following:-

  • Anxiety/Stress
  • Depression
  • Low self esteem
  • Panic disorders
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Loss/Bereavement
  • Anger
  • Assertiveness
  • Divorce
  • Separation
  • Work difficulties
  • Post Natal Depression
  • Trauma
  • Abuse
  • Stress
  • Divorce/Separation
  • Bereavement
  • Assertiveness
  • Unresolved Issues
  • Emotional abuse

By working integratively. I use various approaches depending on a client's needs. For example, a client who is suffering from panic attacks may benefit from Cognitive Behaviour Therapy which, may involve learning coping and breathing techniques, visualisation etc. Another client may find that issues from their past impact on their present day and may find it helpful to explore where these feelings come from in order to help them understand them and hopefully, move forward. It may also be that a client just wants to talk to somebody who is impartial. I sometimes work creatively with clients who might find it difficult to verbalise their feelings and use a number of tools to facilitate this including working with collages, painting etc. Clients do not need to be artistic to use this approach however.

By working together, we can explore your issues or problems in order to help clarify your thoughts and feelings.

    What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy teaches clients how to understand the relationship between incoming thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. By distinguishing between our thoughts and feelings and challenging these thoughts, we can then allow our feelings to change.

How we THINK "cognitive" about events has a powerful influence on how we FEEL about them and then what we DO ("behaviour") about them. CBT has become a clinically proven breakthrough in mental health care.

Studies by research psychologists and pyschiatrists make it clear why CBT has become the preferred treatment for conditions such as:

    All stress related issues....

    PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)

    Trauma & Abuse

    Obsessions and compulsions (OCD)

    Personality disorders

    Anger, Sadness, Fear, Guilt, Hurt

    Low self esteem

    Panic & Anxiety

    Eating disorders

    Sports performance & performance anxieties

    Fear of Public Speaking

    How does CBT work?
CBT helps to make sense of overwhelming problems by breaking them down into 'bite-size pieces,' making them easier to 'digest' and release.

Situations (difficult problem or events) are followed by -

    - Thoughts

    - Emotions/physical symptoms

    - Behaviours

CBT can help to break unhelpful cycles of thought, feelings and behaviour, allowing us to see all parts of the sequence clearly and change them, thereby enabling us to regain self-empowerment to tackle and resolve our problems.
CBT is an active therapy: The therapist and the client both take an active part in helping to resolve the client's issues. A flexible treatment plan is worked out to reflect the client's needs.

In many ways CBT resembles education or coaching. Under expert guidance the client can share in setting realistic goals and deciding which techniques work the best for them individually.

Clients take on assignments between sessions which are developed as much as possible with the clients own active participation to extend and multiply the results of the work done within the time-frame spent with the therapist. By becoming familiar with the coping strategies that I work on with clients, enables the client to use these independently, if required, once therapy has ended.

Ongoing training is essential to my personal and professional development. I regularly attend Workshops and Training Sessions. This enables me to work more effectively with client's presenting issues.
