"How often should I come for counselling?
This depends on the client's availability and time restraints. This is something that can be discussed at the initial session, but of course is open to change at any time should this be necessary.
"What happens at the first session?"
The initial session is a space for you to talk about the presenting issues along with some background information about yourself. At this stage we can discuss what you hope to achieve through our sessions and decide on a focus for future sessions. This is also an opportunity for you to decide whether you feel you would be comfortable working with me and whether you would be happy to continue with further sessions. It will also be an opportunity for me to assess whether I am the best qualified to your particular issues. Should I feel that you would benefit from intervention from another counsellor who is more familiar with your needs, I would be able to recommend an alternative therapist who perhaps may be more experienced in that particular area.
"How long do sessions last?"
Each session is 50 minutes in length.
"I am concerned that things I talk about in the session may be disclosed to others"?
Anything that is discussed in a session remains confidential and is not disclosed to any other party. However, all counsellors are required to be in regular supervision in accordance with the Ethical Framework set by the BACP. This is to ensure counsellors are working as effectively as possible, with the client's best interest. If there should be a need to take issues to supervision, I can offer complete reassurance that anonymity is maintained at all times, and no personal details that could identify you are disclosed. Any notes kept by myself remain confidential and are safely locked away. The only time that confidentiality may be breached is if a client tells me that they may harm themselves or others. However, in the rare event that this should happen, discussion with you, as a client, would always takes place prior to this happening.
